When it comes to spirits, many people think that the only difference is taste. And what is interesting about that is the unique way in which alcoholic beverages are brewed. What makes rum so interesting is the fact that it is one of the few spirits brewed using sugar.
Rum is distilled using molasses, sugar cane, and other sugar-based products before it is aged in a barrel for a certain number of years. It is this process that gives it its sweet taste and ability to be infused with a wide variety of flavors. Unlike other spirits which use mash, rum is almost purely distilled sugar, making it one of the most pure forms of alcohol.
Born of sugar
Rum is one of the best drinks for mixing due to its inherent purity in being made from sugar. In some ways, it is unique in the way in which it is distilled, drawn from sweet substances and aged over long periods of time. In fact, rum on average is aged for twice as long as other spirits. It is this that gives it its rich taste and ability to be mixed with virtually any other drink for a crisp, refreshing experience.
Much like my other favorite forms of alcohol, rum, in its purest form provides a taste and versatility that few other spirits have to offer. The next time you are thinking of exploring the wide world of spirits, consider rum and all of its taste and versatility.
